If you've ever used a multi-effects floorboard, you know the idea: amps, cabs, and stompboxes packed into one unit. Overloud TH-U Premium takes that same philosophy and plants it on your Mac, with the depth of a full studio rack and the convenience of a plug-in.

Dial in a core tone

Choose from 89 guitar amplifiers and 4 bass amplifiers, then pair your pick with one of 50 guitar or 2 bass cabinets. Each cab sits in a room with 18 selectable microphone models, so you can push air without waking the neighbors.

Shape the space

The built-in SuperCabinet module runs on Fluid Convolution and a dual IR loader, letting you blend impulse responses or convert your own. New effects like Reverse Delay and ModulaVerb make washed-out textures and rhythmic ambience easy to reach.

Capture and recall

Scenes let you switch model configurations inside a single preset, handy for verse-to-chorus changes. The amp capture technology means you can profile your own hardware rig and recall it alongside the factory library of more than 1000 presets, all mappable via MIDI.

A mic’d cabinet that doesn’t care about your room

Home recordists who want a full rig without a full room get the most out of TH-U Premium. You open the standalone app or drop the plug-in into a DAW, and suddenly you have a mic’d cabinet that doesn’t care about thin apartment walls. Live performers benefit too — pair it with a MIDI foot controller and you can tap through Scenes without touching the Mac.

Bass players often feel like afterthoughts in amp sim land, but the dedicated bass preset bank and four bass amps make this a solid pick for low-end work. Producers who re-amp DI tracks later appreciate how easy it is to swap cabinets and mic placements after a take, rather than committing during tracking.

Drop it into Logic, Live, or Pro Tools without fuss

TH-U Premium runs as an AudioUnit, VST, or AAX64 plug-in, so it drops into Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Pro Tools, and most other DAWs without fuss. The standalone app is handy for practice sessions — plug in an audio interface, load a preset, and play. If you use a modeler for live gigs, the MIDI mapping ties into your existing footswitch setup, letting TH-U function as a software brain that recalls your tones per song section.

It also plays nicely with macOS audio routing. Combine it with a utility like BlackHole or Loopback, and you can send the processed guitar signal into Zoom calls, streaming software, or a screen recording without extra hardware. Core Audio handles the low-latency path natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.

Small tricks worth knowing

  • Right-click a knob to reset it — faster than dragging back to noon when you’ve twisted something too far.
  • Drag and drop IR files straight onto the dual IR loader instead of digging through the browser.
  • Hold Option while loading a cabinet to replace only the cab while keeping your mic setup intact.
  • Name your Scenes clearly (like “Verse Crunch” or “Solo Lead”) before mapping them to MIDI — the labels show up on some foot controllers that support text feedback.
  • Use the preset search field instead of endlessly scrolling the 1000+ presets; it filters by name as you type.

A quiet but useful feature: the built-in converter for external cabinets means you’re not stuck with the factory IRs. If you’ve collected impulse responses over the years or found a free pack online, you can fold them into the SuperCabinet module and treat them like any other cab in the library.

Questions from the stall

Does TH-U Premium work as a plug-in and on its own?

Yes, it runs as a standalone application and as a plug-in inside supported DAWs on macOS 10.14 Mojave and later.

Can I open my old TH3 presets in TH-U Premium?

TH-U is compatible with TH3 user presets, so you can bring your older sounds into the current version.
