When a house swallows a family whole and leaves no answers behind, stepping inside is already a kind of defeat. Unmourned takes that dread and wraps it in a sanity system that punishes hesitation. On a Mac, the question is less about whether it runs and more about whether you can sit through what it does to you.

Reality bends when the past bleeds through

  • Psychological horror fans — the game alternates between reality and visions of a tragic past, so the story unravels inside your head as much as on screen.
  • Players who enjoy systems-driven tension — darkness weakens your grasp on reality, and paranormal activity intensifies the more your sanity slips.
  • Short, focused sessions — the setup suits diving in for an hour, getting thoroughly unsettled, and stepping away before the walls close in.

Apple Silicon only, and keys need remapping

  • Apple Silicon required — the game runs natively on M-series chips. Intel Macs are not supported.
  • Controls are PC-first — expect to remap keys or spend a few minutes getting comfortable with the default layout.
  • Performance varies by chip — base M1 machines may need lowered settings for smooth frame rates; M2 Pro and above handle it with room to spare.
  • Darkness is a mechanic, not just an aesthetic — you will spend a lot of time in near-black spaces, so a calibrated display makes a real difference.

A night inside Jason's house

Picture a small-stream horror player — someone who narrates their reactions live, with a handful of regulars in chat. They start around midnight, headphones on, room dark except for the glow of a Studio Display.

Within ten minutes they're muttering to no one. The night-vision camera has just revealed a child's handprint on a wall that was clean seconds ago. Chat starts spamming "turn around". They don't. Sanity is already at seventy percent and the house hasn't even shown its worst rooms yet. What makes the stream work isn't the jumps — it's the slow erosion. The viewer count climbs as the player's confidence crumbles. This is the kind of session Unmourned is built for: one person, one house, no backup.

Little things you'd miss on a first run

  • The photo camera works on surfaces, not just scenes. Snap a close-up of a mirror, a child's drawing, or a stain on the floor — some trigger short vision flashes that fill gaps in the family's timeline. The game never tells you this.
  • Sound cues precede most random events. A faint exhale, a cupboard latch, a single piano note from upstairs. If you hear something that doesn't belong, stop moving and raise the night-vision camera before you round the corner.
  • Light switches are temporary. Rooms you've illuminated can go dark again on their own when sanity dips below half. The hallway bulb flickering out isn't a bug — it's a warning.
  • Staying still in a lit room recovers a sliver of sanity. It's almost never the right call, but in the final third of the game those few seconds can keep a vision sequence from bleeding into reality at the wrong moment.
  • The hidden door isn't the only hidden door. Once you find the first one, the photo camera becomes more useful in hallways and basements than in the main rooms.

Dial the mouse down to forty percent

The defaults are clearly tuned for Windows test benches, so a couple of quick adjustments on Mac make the experience noticeably smoother:

  • Mouse sensitivity. Dial it down to about forty percent of the default. The camera swings too fast at the shipped setting, and horror games lose tension when you can whip around like an action hero.
  • Audio mode to headphones. This isn't labeled prominently, but the binaural panning is one of the game's best tricks. Footsteps behind you, whispers from the floor above — surround speakers won't place them correctly the way a good pair of headphones will.
  • Post-processing to medium. On M2 and M3 machines you can keep textures high, but the heavy blur and chromatic aberration on the ultra preset obscure details you need to see. Medium gives you the atmosphere without the smearing.
  • Film grain off, at least at first. It adds unease but masks the faint visual tells that trigger vision transitions. Try it after your first playthrough, not during.

None of these are buried in config files — they're right in the options menu, just easy to skip when you're impatient to start.

Questions from the stall

What is the sanity system in Unmourned?

Staying in darkness weakens your character's grip on reality, causing paranormal activity to grow stronger and making it harder to tell visions from the present.

What is the story behind the house?

The game follows a dark and tragic history connected to the previous owners, a family who disappeared mysteriously, and the story unfolds through alternating reality and visions of the past.
