Risen is a gritty, open-world fantasy RPG that strands you on the volcanic island of Faranga. You can follow the way of the sword, become a staff fighter, or learn the arcane arts as a mage.

Does Risen run on Apple Silicon Macs?

Yes, this build is specifically made for ARM architecture. It's been tested on macOS Tahoe with a 2024 M4 Mac mini, so performance on modern Apple Silicon machines is exactly what you'd hope for.

What's the combat and world like?

The world feels dangerous and grounded, not a brightly lit power fantasy. With over 60 hours of gameplay, the island is packed with side quests and creatures that don't scale to your level, so a wrong turn can be genuinely tense.

What if the game won't launch?

If you see an error on first launch, don't panic. Head back to the disk image you mounted and run the included Fix file—that patches things up and gets you into the game.

A session on Faranga, step by step

I start a new game and the beach is quiet, just waves and a few scavengeable plants. The first ten minutes are about learning what the island thinks of you—mostly nothing good. I grab a makeshift weapon, poke around a ruined hut, and immediately regret picking a fight with a wolf. Reload, try a different path. That’s the rhythm: cautious exploration, a quick save before every ruin, and a slow realization that the Don’s camp is friendlier than the Inquisition’s, at least for now.

By the half-hour mark I’ve chosen a faction questline and started favoring the sword. I spend most sessions alternating between a main story beat and three or four side tasks—clearing a cave, delivering a message, learning to sneak past a troll I’m not ready for. The game doesn’t rush you, so a two-hour evening might be one dungeon crawl, a new armor piece, and a lot of herb picking.

Bump up the heavy camera sensitivity

Risen’s default controls on Mac can use a little tuning before they feel right. Here’s what I’d adjust right after the intro:

  • Mouse sensitivity. The camera can feel heavy out of the box. Bump the in-game sensitivity up a notch or two, then fine-tune from the macOS pointer settings if it still drags.
  • Quick-save key. F5 is the standard, but if your keyboard shortcuts collide with Mission Control or Spotlight, remap it. Getting used to tapping that key often is the best survival tip.
  • Subtitles on. Voice acting is solid in English and German, but some NPCs mumble through their beard. Subtitles catch quest details you’d otherwise miss.
  • Draw distance and shadows. On Apple Silicon you can max things out, but I’d keep shadows on medium—the volcanic glare looks more natural that way, and you gain a few frames if you’re recording or streaming.

How Risen fits with other apps and macOS features

Because this is a self-contained build, it plays nicely alongside your usual tools. I keep Notes open on a second desktop for quest tracking—just a running list of who asked for what, since the journal is functional but brief. Swiping between desktops with a trackpad makes it feel like part of the same workflow.

If you use a controller, macOS recognizes most Bluetooth gamepads without extra drivers. Pair it, launch Risen, and the button prompts switch automatically. For streaming or recording sessions, OBS grabs the window cleanly after a quick permissions check in System Settings under Screen Recording.

The game’s save folder sits inside its own wrapper, so Time Machine backs it up with everything else. That’s saved me once after a corrupted quicksave—restoring the whole folder from an hour earlier brought everything back. A small detail, and one that pairs nicely with the "risen torrent mac" approach some folks look for, since you can point Time Machine at whatever build you’re running and keep that same safety net.
