If you played Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Village picks up Ethan Winters' story a few years later. It shifts the horror from a Louisiana bayou to a snowy European village, but keeps the first-person view that made the previous game feel so immediate. The Mac version brings the full package—base game, DLC, and extra modes—in one download.
The Winters family saga continues in first person
- A complete single-player horror story that continues from RE7
- Experiencing the action entirely in first person
- Playing the Shadows of Rose DLC, which wraps up the Winters family arc
- Jumping into The Mercenaries: Additional Orders for arcade-style score attacks
Requires Apple silicon and a specific macOS launch trick
- Built for Apple silicon Macs—Intel models are not supported
- Requires macOS Monterey 12.x or Ventura 13.0 and later
- Offline launch is sometimes needed to avoid a black screen on first start
Black screen on launch even though audio plays
A few issues pop up often enough that they're worth mentioning up front. Most are easy to fix once you know what's going on.
Black screen on launch. The game fires up but you get audio and no picture. Disconnect your Mac from Wi‑Fi before opening the app, then reconnect once you're past the title screen. CAPCOM's network check sometimes hangs on first boot, and skipping it solves the problem cleanly. You only need to do this once—after the initial run, the game launches normally online.
App won't open at all. If dragging the app into Applications and double-clicking does nothing, the Terminal command in the installer notes is the fix. Open Terminal, paste the command, and let it run. It can look like it's frozen—don't force quit. Give it a minute or two, and the game will start. On an M4 Mac mini tested with macOS Tahoe, the pause was about 90 seconds before the window appeared.
Frame drops in the village square. The central area is dense with geometry and weather effects. If you're seeing stutters, lower the resolution scaling first before touching texture quality. Dropping from native resolution to around 80% scaling often smooths things out without hurting the look much.
Controller not recognized. The Mac version supports controllers natively, but pairing order matters. Connect your controller before launching the game, not after. If it still doesn't register, toggle Bluetooth off and on while the game is at the main menu, then press a button on the controller. That usually wakes the connection.
Turn off motion blur for a sharper camera
Out of the box, Village picks a balanced preset that prioritizes resolution over frame rate. A few tweaks make the game feel better on most Apple silicon Macs.
- Turn off motion blur. The camera motion blur is aggressive and can make tracking enemies harder than it needs to be. Disabling it sharpens the image during quick turns.
- Switch aiming to hold. The default is toggle-to-aim, which feels clunky in first person. Changing it to hold puts aiming on the right mouse button the way most shooters handle it.
- Increase field of view slightly. The default FOV feels tight on a monitor a foot or two from your face. Pushing it to around 85–90 opens up the periphery without the fisheye distortion you get at higher values.
- Set audio to headphones mode. Even if you're using speakers, the headphone mix emphasizes positional cues better. Footsteps and distant gunfire become much easier to place.
- Bind a quick-heal key. The radial menu works, but binding a dedicated key to first-aid meds saves you in fights where paging through the inventory gets you killed. I put it on a side mouse button.
A workflow for clearing Castle Dimitrescu
Castle Dimitrescu is the game's first major interior area and where Village really shows its survival horror roots. Here's how I approach it from the moment you step through the front door to the boss fight at the top.
Step one: map the safe room. The merchant room near the entrance is your anchor. Sell any crystal fragments and treasure you've picked up in the village. Buy the shotgun if you haven't already—the handgun isn't enough for the armored enemies upstairs. Upgrade its power once if you have the lei.
Step two: clear the first floor systematically. Work clockwise from the main hall. Check every drawer and cabinet. The castle is stingy with handgun ammo but generous with crafting materials, so pick up everything. Enemies in the dining room and kitchen patrol on fixed routes. Wait for them to face away, then move. Knife attacks from behind save bullets and work on the moroaicǎ if you catch them unaware.
Step three: handle the daughters without panic. Each daughter fight is an environmental puzzle more than a DPS race. Cassandra in the armory falls fast if you shoot the red barrels when she's near them. For Daniela in the library, pull the skylight lever and drag the fight there—the cold air stuns her. Bela in the dungeon is the trickiest because the space is tight. Use the pipe bombs you've been saving. Two direct hits end the fight.
Step four: the Lady Dimitrescu chase. After you insert the four masks, she stalks the main hall. You can't hurt her here. The goal is to reach the tower elevator without getting cornered. Bait her attack animation by standing near a pillar, then sprint past while she recovers. The window for this is about two seconds. It feels tight the first time, but the timing is consistent.
Step five: the boss fight. The rooftop fight has two phases. First phase is straightforward—target the humanoid body with the sniper rifle if you found it, otherwise the shotgun at close range. Second phase she transforms into a dragon-like creature. Fly around the tower and use the mounted turret when she hovers. Save a first-aid med or two for the acid spray. Once she crashes into the tower, unload everything into the glowing weak point on her back.
Tip: Board up the windows in the merchant room before you head upstairs. It gives you one less angle to worry about if you need to retreat and heal.
