Most strategy epics put you in command of an army. This one puts you in command of a voidship, a trade warrant, and a crumbling corner of the Imperium. Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader drops you into the Koronus Expanse not as a soldier, but as a lord-captain whose every decree ripples outward.
Minute to minute, you steer a party of the faithful, the psychic, and the outright alien across uncharted space. Conversations carry weight: a trade pact signed today can starve a colony next month. Between the talking, combat unfolds on a grid. It's turn-based, built on the classic Rogue Trader ruleset, so positioning and cover matter as much as your bolter's fire rate. You might spend twenty minutes untangling a noble feud on the bridge, then another thirty clearing a cultist-infested cargo bay deck by deck.

Running a colony from the bridge
Colony management isn't a side menu you check between fights — it threads through the whole campaign. Here's a typical workflow when a new colony request lands in your log.
- Open the warrant chambers. The notification flags a colonist delegation on Dargonus. You read the proposal: they want a promethium refinery, but the site sits near an unexplored debris field.
- Assign the project. You allocate resources and pick a colony leader whose traits affect build speed and output. A tech-priest finishes industrial jobs faster; a seneschal improves trade income from the settlement.
- Resolve the event chain. Two jumps later, a voidship distress call triggers. Raiders hit the supply convoy. You divert course, fight the raiders in ship combat, and recover the promethium haul before it's lost.
- Collect the payoff. Back on Dargonus, the refinery stands. Your colony now produces a trickle of fuel and opens a new dialogue option with the Adeptus Mechanicus envoy — one that shifts faction standing and unlocks a unique plasma weapon schematic.
Tip: Don't ignore colony requests that sound minor. The debris field in this example later spawned a full exploration chain with xenos ruins, a morale bonus for your crew, and a permanent income boost.
An Inquisitorial acolyte's run
Imagine a player who builds a lord-captain around conviction, not profit. They pick the Imperialis background, recruit a sanctioned psyker and a battle sister, and treat every warp-tainted signal like a personal offense. When a derelict station drifts into sensor range, they don't salvage and run — they purge every deck, log heretic data for the Ordo Hereticus, and execute the corrupted governor hiding in the lower spires. The game rewards this. Faction standing with the Inquisition rises, a new rumour chain opens, and the party's conviction unlocks dialogue choices that bypass a boss fight twenty hours later. It's not a cosmetic alignment slider; the sector remembers what kind of Rogue Trader you are.
