This one's for players who get a kick out of starting fresh and scrapping their way through all over again. If you played the first Hades, you already know Supergiant's rhythm—Hades II gives you the same buzz with a new face of the Underworld.

What you do, run after run

  • Choose your path. Each chamber offers a choice: a specific god's boon, a currency to gather, a health pickup, or a hammer to alter your weapon. You're always weighing risk against immediate need.
  • Fight with witchcraft and steel. You are Melinoë, the Princess of the Underworld, so combat mixes swift melee hits, a ranged cast, and a sprint that rewards aggressive play.
  • Grab a god's favor. Olympians like Apollo and Demeter hand out boons that stack onto your attack, special, and cast, remixing your build on the fly so no two escapes feel quite the same.
  • Die, learn, and go again. Death brings you back to the Crossroads where you spend collected resources on permanent upgrades, letting you push a little farther next time.

The feel of the Underworld

Supergiant leans hard into the art and music so the stage always feels alive. Color palettes shift between the sun-dappled fields of Erebus and the cramped, torch-lit corridors of Oceanus, and the soundtrack pulls you straight into Melinoë's headspace. It's a sequel that understands what made the original click: the loop is tight, the characters are sharp, and you're always just one room away from a combination of boons that sparks pure chaos.

Settings I'd change before the second run

A few defaults in Hades II lean conservative, and small tweaks make the action feel more direct. None of this is buried, but it's easy to miss when you're itching to get back into a run.

  • Turn off screen shake. The camera trembles on heavy hits by default. It looks dramatic, but it muddies your sense of spacing when three witches are throwing projectiles at once. I flip it off under Display for cleaner reads.
  • Damage numbers on. They're disabled out of the box. Turning them on gives you immediate feedback about which boon combos are pulling their weight, especially when you're testing a new cast.
  • Auto-aim for the cast. Aiming a precise cast during a dash feels better with a little assist. The default setting undershoots what feels natural on a gamepad, so I notch it up one tick.
  • Sprint held, not toggled. Melinoë's sprint is central to survival. Holding a shoulder button instead of toggling it gives you quicker stops and starts when you're weaving through area attacks.

Mac stutters and early friction you can smooth out

Most friction points aren't bugs—they're design choices that feel rough until you know the trick. A couple are specific to playing on a Mac, especially if you grabbed the hades ii mac build from a community source.

  • Stuttering after a fresh launch. The game compiles shaders during the first few chambers. If the opening run hitches, let it play out for three or four rooms—it smooths itself and stays smooth after that. Quitting and relaunching just starts the process over.
  • Dashing into lava or traps. Melinoë's sprint covers more distance than Zagreus's dash did. New players overcommit constantly. Tapping sprint twice in quick succession stops you short, and practicing that rhythm in the training chamber saves a lot of health.
  • Witch's Staff attack chain lock. The third swing in the basic combo roots you for a split second. Canceling it into a special or a sprint keeps your movement fluid and avoids trades you don't want.
  • Resource icons not showing. A handful of users on Hades II torrent macOS builds reported missing pickup prompts for ash and psyche. Switching the interface language to English, even temporarily, usually forces the icons to reload. You can switch back right after.

Questions from the stall

Is this a direct sequel to the original Hades?

Yes, it's built by the same studio and follows the familiar roguelike loop, with new gods, a new protagonist, and fresh areas to explore.

Can I play it in my preferred language?

Quite probably. The interface supports Russian, English, German, Greek, Spanish, Italian, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Turkish, Ukrainian, French, and Japanese.
